I have a 1971 ford 4500 3 cyl diesel. At first when I bought it the generator / regulator allowed the light on the cluster to go out (charging ok).

Was digging with my 3-cylinder diesel Ford 4500 backhoe when it just died. It was like it ran out of fuel. It will turn over but not start. It will start with. Dec 4, 2017 - Location: Serial number stamped on the right side of the Ford 4000 clutch housing, behind the starter. Additional plate inside the Ford 4500.

Now after it sat the winter, it will not charge at all. Checked with a VOM, no charge at all no matter the RPM. Tried repoleraizing the genny by shorting bat+ to field.

I know alternators are much better then generators because of the larger field. So does anybody know of a fairly simple drop in replacement for the 1971 ford 4500 tractor? I would want to keep the tach drive, cause that still works on my cluster.

Is there a good alternator replacement that is one wire and eliminates the voltage regulator? Also has tach drive?

Thanks, Kenny. You can sometimes find an externally regulated 10dn gm alt that has a tach drive. But they ain't cheap.

Try some more tests on that lucas genny. Slip belt off, jump bat to field and armature. If genny spins, it's good. Hook back up and jump bat to field while she is idling at about 1000 rpm and see if volts come up on the armature.

SoundguyI jumped the battery to the field while it was off (not running) is that a mistake? If i slip the belt off and disconnect the generator completely from everything all i should need to do is put power to the field and ground the armature and see if she spins right? I want to get her back to charging, even if only a little. The original owner said a voltage regulator is what i need, but i would rather verifiy genny ok first. Is there any 'better' regulators out there? If I need one?

Thanks, expense is not too much of an issue as long as a good charging system (alternator) costs me. Hi there all. I took the old regulator and was able to get it to work again by tapping the contacts inside - magnets to the solenoids seem a little week or something. I figured i would keep that reg as a spare as I did purchase a new one. Here is the problem. At 800 RPM or so it charges GREAT less then 15V and it maintains the battery fine - so i was happy.

BUT at PTO level the voltage to the battery goes all the way up to 16.64 volts, this is way too high right? Why would the tractor OVERCHARGE? Thank you, Ken. Spring tension on the field contact too high. Or field contacts welded.

At 800 rpm, it should either not charge or just barely charge. If charging GOOD at 800 rpm ( which is normally the first plasce it will even try to charge at all ). I'd wager the field contact is stuck. SoundguySon of a buzzard, I just bought this darn regulator and its got a problem already? Maybe ill file down the contacts on the old one and stick it back in there haha. Thanks ill take a look, I know 16+V is wayyyyy too much.
