The successful model produced by Mazda for export market was called the Mazda 626 and was based on the Japanese market Mazda Capella. The Mazda 626 was introduced in 1979 as a front engined, compact rear wheel drive car. The Mazda 626 was sold as the Ford Telstar in Asia, Australasia and Southern Africa. The Mazda 626 was considered as a large family car in most of the markets. The 616/618 was replaced by the Mazda 626 and RX 2 in 1979.
