In 1896, two families in Leyland, England formed the Lancashire Steam Motor Company, which manufactured steam-powered lawn mowers, vans and wagons. In 1907, this company was renamed Leyland Motors. In the 1920s, Leyland Motors began producing cars, ranging from luxury touring cars to utility vehicles. The company continued to grow up to and during World War II, when it participated in building tanks and military trucks, including the first model of the Leyland Hippo. After the War, Leyland continued to expand, acquiring a number of other companies and forming various agreements.

In 1955, for example, an Indian company based in Madras began manufacturing commercial vehicles under the brand Ashok Leyland. In 1968, the Leyland holding company merged with British Motor Holdings to create the British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC). It specialised in the manufacture of land rovers, buses and trucks. In 1975, after experiencing financial difficulties, BLMC was nationalised as British Leyland and its land rover, truck and bus divisions were included in the Land Rover Leyland Group. Sales declined in the 1980s. In 1987, the company's truck division merged with a Dutch company to form DAF NV, and in 1988, its bus division was acquired by Volvo Buses in 1988. After DAF NV went bankrupt in 1996, the truck division was sold to the American truck manufacturer, PACCAR.
